During early access of the Ark: Survival Evolved game, the user interface was built for PC users with a keyboard and mouse in mind. This resulted in an unoptimised and terrible experience for console players whose main input method was a controller. A controller has fewer input buttons compared to a keyboard and mouse, so it’s difficult to use if the UI has not been designed with that in mind.
The challenge was to design a UI concept that would create an improved experience for players using a controller. At the same time, it was important to make sure the UI would not detract from the experience of keyboard and mouse users.
